Complex lymphatic therapy consists of various therapeutic activities: lymphatic massage, compression therapy, physiotherapeutic exercises, skin care and counselling of patient and their relatives. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) activates the angio-motorics of the lymphs and lymph fluid flow in the body.
Lymphatic massage affects the parasympathetic nervous system, and due to the transport of allogeneic substances, it relieves pain, helps with heart rate, blood pressure and swelling. Manual lymphatic drainage or lymphatic massage affects the movement of fluids towards the lymph nodes, and due to the work of the nodes, the excretion of harmful substances from the body is activated and the work of the immune system is accelerated.
The effect of manual lymphatic drainage lasts for 3-4 hours; to gain a bigger effect, compression is performed. This can be done with special low-elongation bandages, but also using new Circaid bandages which essentially replace bandaging. The operation of the muscle pump is further enhanced by the pressure exerted by the compression against the muscle tension; for example, walking with a bandaged leg or exercising with a bandaged hand. In case bandaging is no longer needed to reduce swelling, then it is very important to wear the right compression product after the massage, this will keep swelling under control and will prevent swelling from recurring.
Skin care (washing and creaming the skin) is important as bandaging will raise the temperature of the skin and dry it. Creams should be chosen so that they would not corrode the fabric of the compression product and would be absorbed quickly.
Compression therapy is a vital part of lymphatic therapy and often it will bring about the desired result. Complex lymphatic therapy sees, first, pressure-elastic bandages be put on using low-elangation bandages, second, the client is measures and accordingly a circular or flat fabric medical compression product is chosen for everyday wear (depending on the product, also during the night). These products are e.g. compression stockings, knee socks, sleeves and gloves.
CONSULTATION FOR SWELLING AND ONCOLOGY PATIENTS
Consultation is for anyone who has developed or is experiencing swelling in any area of the body. We evaluate the condition of the skin, skin colour and temperature, location of swelling, consistency of swelling, location of scars and mobility. Together, we will find the cause for edema, whether this has become about due to previous surgeries, traumas, burns, health problems caused by pregnancy, unexplained inflammations, large weight fluctuations or psychological experiences. We measure the limbs and compare the results in co-operation with the client. We also ask the patient to fill out a swelling diary during a certain time period.
Together, we will find a solution!
MEASUREMENT OF PRODUCTS WITH A 90% DISCOUNT PROVIDED BY ESTONIAN HEALTH INSURANCE FUND
After a course of lymphatic therapy, having achieved the lowest possible result for the circumference of the limb, we order specially sized, low-elongation, flat-woven compression sock with the suitable pressure class. This will help prevent recurrence / increase of swelling.
Check out the products of JOBST® and MEDi, the purchase of which is supported by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund.
SELECTING A COMPRESSION PRODUCT AND MAKING THE MEASUREMENTS
Having received a recommendation from the doctor to wear compression stockings or having independently decided to choose a product that suits you, we recommend consulting with a specialist who will be able to find the right material and the right pressure class for your first product.
Purchasing a recurrent product, the therapist can always be consulted again if there have been any concerns about wearing the product. If necessary, it is also possible to review all the nuances in order to find the best solution in terms of both their material and pressure. Proper use of a medical compression product is beneficial for your health in the long term, suitable product providing pleasure and support while being worn.
COMPRESSION TREATMENT APPARATUS
Compression therapy with pneumatic massage is particularly suitable for treating edema. Effective and intensive therapy that intensively affects the lymphatic system and provides quick results in reducing swelling. By combining the operation of the machine with hand massage provided by the therapist, it is also possible to be used in treating oncological patients. Apparatus therapy affects subcutaneous tissue in the same way as lymphatic massage and stimulates the outflow of both lymph and interstitial fluids, stimulating cell and tissue metabolism. This is ideal as a replacement for massage in case of having problems like varicose veins, edema, muscle tension, cellulite. Also suitable for boosting immunity and “waking up” the system before surgeries. Be sure to use it before and after travel in case of having problems with edema due to air travel.
Apparatus lymphatic massage is suitable for treating a wide range of ailments and indications in different people. The machine has a separately installed cuff for the arm and the leg but also for the lower body, i.e. trouser part. Pressure during the therapy session is adjusted by the therapist according to the needs of the client.
The device works on the principle of periodic compression – the tissues are smoothly affected by the cuffs, which are inflated in a certain order.
Apparatus compression therapy is an effective and intensive therapy that intensively affects the lymphatic system and provides quick results.
Physiotherapy evaluates the health condition and functional ability of the person. Together with the patient, we find ways to improve the person’s well-being, quality of life and ability to cope after difficult surgeries or illnesses.
The physiotherapist listens to the person and identifies problems, finding solutions through individual therapeutic exercises and tests, manual techniques, combined massages, kinesio taping, physical therapy, counselling of the patient and their relatives, and many other special methods.
Physiotherapy is a process that changes with each session as the patient progresses and achieves their goals. It is also suitable for preventing health problems and injuries in older people with reduced physical abilities. If there are signs of muscle asymmetry, such as with one-sided sports enthusiasts, or of using the wrong habitual patterns in everyday life, such as working with a computer in the wrong body position, then dealing with initial changes will help prevent the development of strain injuries and other conditions.
- Muscoloskeletal problems that do not require surgery: e.g. poor posture (kyphosis, hypo- or hyperlordosis), incorrect work ergonomics, strain;
- Pain in a specific area or in relation to a certain movement;
- Preoperative physiotherapy for faster recovery;
- Postoperative physiotherapy to restore function and painless mobility.
Due to swelling, lymphatic and blood circulation slow down, this causes an increase in pressure under the skin, sometimes causing pain. When applying kinesio tape, the skin experiences a lifting effect. The space between the skin and muscle expands, this allows to reduce swelling and pain. The elasticity of the kinesio tape creates a gentle massaging effect by movement on the surface of the skin – this helps reduce pain. Maintaining the normal mobility of the body is important as movement affects the lymphatic system and thereby improves functioning of the system.
Kinesio taping is most widely used in sports and rehabilitation. It is effective in reducing musculoskeletal disorders, helping to restore the area affected by strain or trauma, providing support without impeding mobility.
Classic massage alleviates muscle ailments. Different techniques are used for affecting tissue metabolism, blood and lymph circulation. The muscles relax, their elasticity improves, and tension pains decrease. The treatment of soft tissues also has a calming effect on the central nervous system.
The purpose of combined massage is to focus on the area of the body that is currently of concern to the client, be it tension headaches, neck, back or shoulder pain. If necessary, we perform the massage using warm lava stones, cups or a dry bush.
Scar treatment or scar therapy results are usually seen immediately after treatment and the change may be significant. Pain is decreased, colour of the scar changes, mobility and shape improve. Therapy starts with an evaluation of the scar and then a realistic treatment plan is put together and goals are set to be achieved. Most times, person needs 1 to 3 therapy sessions, depending on the severity of the scar.
Therapy is necessary, if:
- Elongation of the skin is disturbed, and the person feels a tearing feeling in the area of the scar;
- Joint mobility is impaired due to the scar;
- Lymph movement is disrupted due to the scar;
- The scar is too conspicuous, and the person wants to correct it without surgery.
It is impossible to make the scar invisible, but using scar therapy, it is possible to make the skin surface smoother.
The scar is often not considered as a cause for pain, but a scar is often able to cause tension and pain in the muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels and internal organs. If the connective tissue layers (fascia) have been cut or fractures have occurred as a result of a trauma, then the connective tissue layers (adhering / gluing) become closed as the wounds heal and normal movement between the different layers no longer takes place.
Scar can also cause posture disorders, dysfunction of the neck, shoulder girdle and the spine, as well as internal organ dysfunction.
